Jamu is one of the greatest untold success-stories in the world of medicine, yet it is virtually unknown outside Indonesia and Malaysia. Some 80% of the population of these countries relies on its natural medicinal power for their ongoing health and wellbeing. Jamu is thought to have originated on Madura, an Indonesian Island where people reputedly live for up to 135 years. After living in Southeast Asia for a number of years, a person born in the West finds that their perception of life becomes challenged by what they see and experience. In my own case, I now understand the health stance of Prof. Dr. Liem, the former director of the Dutch FDA. Many years ago we became friends and he shared a story with me that I have never forgotten. He was a university-trained cosmetic chemist with a brilliant mind, performing an important function within the Dutch Government.
